Welcome

Welcome to the first edition of the Patrons of the Prado Newsletter for the 2007-2008 gala planning year. Can you believe that Patrons' is about to celebrate its 10th birthday? In that time the organization has increased its giving from an initial $8,000 to each of three museums to its most recent gift of $94,000 per museum. None of this would have happened without the inspiration of its founders and the dedication and hard work of all the members. We look forward to working with all of you in planning and executing a successful and rewarding "Up, Up, and Away" gala for 2008!

President's Report: Kathleen Buoymaster

Dear Patrons of the Prado,

We are off and running to what I anticipate to be another successful and exiting year for Patrons of the Prado. How fabulous it was to be able to give the three beneficiaries $94,000 each - WOW !!!! Congratulations to Barbara Brown and her dedicated committee for a job extremely well done. And now it's "Up, Up, and Away" with Elisabeth Bergan as she takes us soaring to new heights with the 2008 Gala. The date is July 12th -- mark your calendars now!!! Start talking about it now -- build the excitement for what promises to be the party of the year.

Judy Burer and Dottie Stanley have put in place four stimulating and fun events for this year, starting with a wonderful evening of celebration during our holiday season, at the beautiful home of June and Neil Ash. You won't want to miss this lovely time of fun and fellowship. Mark your calendars now -- December 22. We will miss you if you're not there.

We are now ten years young and it definitely appears to be time to have a study and revision of our Bylaws and Standing Rules. Achievement of this goal will better equip our organization to move forward in our mission with clarity. As discussed in Robert's Rules of Order ...

When an organization is brought into existence, the first bylaws should be simple and to the point and should include only what is necessary to begin functioning as an organization. As the organization grows and problems arise, the organization can amend the bylaws to meet its needs. Foreseeing all the problems that will arise or how the organization will develop is impossible. Therefore, members should periodically review their bylaws to see if they need change. Reviewing the bylaws is an opportunity for members to be honest with themselves about whether the bylaws meet the organization's current needs. (McConnell, 2001, pg. 330)

We have grown fast and our dynamic has changed ~ our rules need to catch up !!! Our parliamentarian, Jeri Rovsek, will be in charge of this committee, but we will need and want everyone's attention and support as we strive to do this monumental task.

In summary, as your President, my goals for this 2007-2008 year are:

  1. To support the Prado Benefit Gala in every way that I can
  2. To provide a revision of our Bylaws and Standing Rules
  3. To involve each active member, actively working toward our goals and mission

I am very much looking forward to seeing you all at our holiday party.

Till then ~

Kathleen

News About our Members

A big "thank you" to the many Patrons' members who helped out during the fires, either at evacuation sites or hosting those who had to be evacuated. For those of you forced to leave we are particularly grateful that you were able to return home to find your homes and more important, those items that could never be replaced, intact.

Dottie Stanley (pictured to the left) was voted "Best Financial Planner" for 2007 in a La Jolla Light Readers' Poll. Dottie, a 19 year Merrill Lynch Vice President and financial advisor in the La Jolla office, is also highly regarded for her art work and dedication to the artistic community.

Diane York-Goldman (pictured to the right), along with her husband, Mitch and 100 other participants, recently completed a bike ride from San Francisco to San Diego. The ride, a benefit for challenged athletes, was halted in Santa Barbara due to the fires.

A Special Award for Elizabeth Bergan: Our own Patron's member, Elisabeth Bergan is among the 15 women who will be honored by the Salvation Army on April 1, 2008 as a "Woman of Dedication." The luncheon will be held at the Manchester Grand Hyatt. The women were presented at a tea on November 8th at the home of another Patron member, June Ash.

We are constantly seeking news of interest about our members that you would be willing to share. Please contact either Cindy Goodman or Cindy Larson-Daugherty to have those items included in the quarterly newsletter.

Call for Auction Items and Participation

We only have one shot at this a year, ladies, and with all of us working together, we are bound to have a spectacular 10th anniversary event!

Festive Fall Lunch Launches New Members by Ellen Zinn

Membership Chairs, Ellen Zinn and Linda Moore, feted new members and their sponsors at an orientation and luncheon Tuesday, November 6, at the La Jolla Country Club. Linda and Ellen are extremely enthusiastic about the new member class, which includes Jane Butcher, Susan Clifton, Susan Hoekenga, Reena Horowitz, Cindy Klong, Reinette Levine, Frances Powell and Elizabeth Taft. They note the group's geographic diversity and their varying philanthropic interests. Each has shown strong leadership and has the capacity to make a true difference in Patrons of the Prado.

The meeting began with Founder and President Kathleen Buoymaster welcoming all. She mentioned how we have made such a difference in Balboa Park, citing a recent book on the permanent collections of the Museum of Man that was underwritten by Patrons, our season sponsorship at The Old Globe, and our significant support for the Dead Sea Scrolls at the San Diego Natural History Museum.

Ellen Zinn recounted this history of Patrons, from its founding in 1997 until today. She reviewed our various fundraising events and strategies. To-date Patrons of the Prado has awarded $1,250,000 to our eleven museums and theaters. Ellen discussed our Members and Directors Reception, Christmas party, Annual Meeting, and South Coast Plaza shopping trip.

Linda Moore educated new members on the opportunities to become involved and on their responsibilities of membership. She encouraged them to begin putting gala tables together now, and presented new members their directories.

Elizabeth Bergen entranced all with her discussion of next summer's July 12, 2008 gala, "Up, Up, and Away," to be held in the Spreckles Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park. Members chose committees they want to be involved with and enjoyed seeing her artwork for the invitation.
