It’s a new year and excitement is building for our 10th annual Patrons of the Prado gala July 12th! We feel exceedingly fortunate to have Kathleen Buoymaster as our president and Elizabeth Bergan chairing “Up, Up and Away” this year. Please take time to read their abbreviated profiles, as well as those of the leaders of our recipient museums, later in this issue.
Already our gala committee is hard at work but, as noted in our last newsletter, in order for this 10th anniversary to be the event of the year in San Diego, we need all of your help. Remember, this is what we do!! Please think about donating or finding at least one fabulous auction item for the gala, as well as forming a table, placing an ad in the program or providing “Up, Up and Away” underwriting.
We look forward to your participation and to seeing you in July.
Cindy Goodman and Cynthia Larson-Daugherty, Communications co-chairs

Dear Patrons of the Prado, By the time you read this we will have already enjoyed our reception at the Mingei Museum where we will be honoring the executive directors and board presidents of our beneficiaries. We had a wonderful response this year to the invitation and anticipate a full house. How fortunate we are to be able to have a private viewing of Mingei exhibitions and a “ behind the scenes” tour with Rob Sidner. It promises to be a very special evening and also offers an extraordinary opportunity to chat with these folks and hear first hand how much Patrons of the Prado has meant to these organizations. To hear and know that our labors of love have made a difference is good for our soul!!! The new year began with much enthusiasm and many, many meetings...board, membership, fund development, gala, etc. We also had a “board retreat” at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis club on January 12th where we had great “round table” and brain-storming sessions with regard to our by-laws and general review of the past 10 years. Lots of ideas came forth with a focus upon growth for the future. Cindy Goodman will be chairing an ad-hoc committee for long range planning. And, of course, Jeri Rovsek is in charge of the by-laws revision. We enjoyed breakfast and lunch together, Oceanside...really giving us a chance to talk and get acquainted. And boy did we talk!!! It was a very productive and fun day. Having the pleasure and opportunity to make new friends in Patrons of the Prado has been an added and extraordinary blessing for me this year as your president, and I thank you. We are a busy and dedicated group of talented ladies!!! Going here and there...Paris for dinner, India with the girls, Africa, Israel, on and on it goes! Whew!!! Then, not to mention our members’ participation and dedication to other worthy organizations representing hundreds of hours of volunteer service...president of this, chairman of that. And then there are the honors and awards received by our gals, too numerous to mention, the exciting and fast-paced professions of many, the dazzling careers, etc. I am amazed and in awe of all that we do and who we are. We are, indeed, special in every good and humble sense of the word and I leave you with that thought. See you soon, Kathleen |
Patrons of the Prado is delighted to announce Mrs. Donald (Lois) Roon as the Honorary Chair for our 2008 Gala: “Up, Up and Away”. We are indeed, fortunate to have Lois as our “star” for this year’s event. Her devotion and philanthropic gifts to the arts are well known in the community and her love affair with Balboa Park’s museums has been going on for years. All of San Diego as well as thousands of visitors to our museums have benefited from her generosity and leadership, and Patrons’, once again, is benefiting from her support as Honorary Chair. Thank you sincerely, Lois, for accepting this special position of honor and, of course, for all you have done and continue to do for the arts organizations “on the Prado”.
An East Coast transplant of forty-four years, Kathleen was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Duke University and then continued on to design school in California. As a "stay-at-home mom" for many years, she raised three sons and enjoyed volunteer work before pursuing her career in interior design and becoming a senior designer for the prestigious firm of Cannell and Chaffin. In 1985 she founded her own design firm in La Jolla which bears her name. As President of Kathleen Buoymaster, Inc., and a founder of Patrons of Prado, she still enjoys and finds time for serving our community. Kathleen and her husband, Ned, live in La Jolla with their two Old English Sheepdogs, Charlie and Eddie.
In our last newsletter we congratulated Gala Chair Elizabeth Bergan for being selected a Salvation Army Woman of Dedication. This month we thought you might like to learn a little more about her.
Elizabeth was born in Hungary, came to the U.S., with her family in 1957, and graduated with from St. John’s in Annapolis with a degree in physics and philosophy. She began her career as a Montessori teacher. Once she’d married John in 1980, she turned her sights to volunteer work, first serving as President of the Scripps Hospital auxiliary, then moving on to serving on the boards of the Mingei Museum, Old Globe Theater, and Costume council, as well as chairing the Jewel Ball for Las Patronas. She currently serves on the boards of Mama’s Kitchen and the San Diego Historical Society, as well as Patrons of the Prado. In her spare time Elizabeth loves to read, play croquet and spend time with John and their much beloved collie, Nikki. John, Elizabeth and Nikki reside in La Jolla.

For all those interested in riding camels, our newest expert is Jeanne Jones (seen here with beautiful granddaughter Riley Beek).
Did you know that The Hall of Champions was actually on the Prado when Patrons’ was formed? For those who may be asking, that’s the reason they are included among our 11 recipient museums, even though they have since moved to a permanent home in another section of the park.

We are also actively soliciting high quality donations for this year’s event and look forward to your helping us with this task. Once again, ladies, it’s our only fundraiser of the year, and we need your support!! “Best sellers” are generally restaurant packages, meals prepared in private homes, out-of town travel opportunities and spa experiences, but...don’t be afraid to be creative! Sometimes the most unusual items prove to be the most popular.
And...it’s not too early to begin thinking about forming a table. This being our 10th anniversary, it would be fantastic if we could fill the organ pavilion to capacity with people who love Balboa Park as much as we do.
